Police have apprehended an 18-year-old youth in connection with the murder of a 14-year-old schoolgirl in the city’s Rayerbazar area.
Siam was picked up from his residence in Kathalbagan area, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Dhanmondi Zone) Assistant Commissioner Shah Mostafa Tarikuzzaman told the media on Thursday. “In primary inquest, Siam admitted to the crime. He also said the victim and him were previously acquainted,” Mostafa told The Daily Star this morning.
Family members said she was attacked in front of their home at approximately 9:00pm last night.
Speaking to journalists, the victim’s father, Belal Hossain, said his daughter was a class eight student at Rayerbazar High School. She had gone outside with her younger brother last night.
“After a while, we heard commotion. When we went downstairs, we saw that someone had hacked my daughter and left her there. She was critically injured. We first took her to Sikder Medical, and later transferred her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital,” he added.
Doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital declared the schoolgirl dead around 10:15pm.
The victim’s mother, Nadia Begum, alleged that Siam had been molestating her daughter over mobile phone for the past three to four years.
“I once scolded him over the phone. He killed my daughter. I want justice,” she said.
