Supreme Court Appellate Division Justice AKM Asaduzzaman has formally retired from office.
As he turns 67 on Feb 28, the constitutional retirement age, the court will remain closed that Saturday, prompting the Appellate Division to arrange his official farewell on Thursday.
The Supreme Court Bar Association accorded him a send-off in the presence of the five-member full bench headed by Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury.
With his departure, five judges now remain in the Appellate Division: Chief Justice Zubayer, Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam, Justice Md Rezaul Haque, Justice SM Emdadul Hoque, Justice Farah Mahbub.
The farewell proceedings began in the chief justice’s courtroom with remarks from Acting Attorney General Arshadur Rouf, reports bdnews24.com.
Supreme Court Bar Association President AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon also addressed the gathering. Justice Asaduzzaman delivered the concluding speech. He called on lawyers to exercise restraint to preserve the dignity of both bench and bar.
“If the bar is good, the bench will be good. If the bench is good, the court will be good.”
He noted that a judge’s order may not always satisfy everyone, but remedies exist through higher courts. Misconduct towards judges, he added, is “unacceptable”. Born on Mar 1, 1959, in the Sapahar Upazila of Naogaon, Justice Asaduzzaman follows in the footsteps of his father, the renowned lawyer MA Samad.
He earned his LLB (Honours) and LLM from Rajshahi University before enrolling as an advocate at the Dhaka District Bar on Sept 5, 1983.
He moved to the High Court in 1985 and was enrolled in the Appellate Division in 2001.
His career on the bench began on Aug 2, 2003, when he joined the High Court Division as an additional judge, before becoming a permanent judge on Aug 27, 2005.
He was eventually elevated to the Appellate Division on Mar 25 last year.
