Prof Abu Sayeed joins BNP
Staff Reporter :
Former state minister for information and veteran Awami League leader Prof Abu Sayeed has joined the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), marking a significant political shift after decades of association with the fallen fascist party (AL).
According to BNP media cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan, Prof Abu Sayeed formally joined the party on Wednesday by presenting a bouquet to BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan.
Prof Abu Sayeed was a senior leader of the Awami League and played a prominent role during the party’s 1996 government. He served as State Minister for Information at that time and was also a member of the Bangladesh Constitution Drafting Committee, contributing to key constitutional reforms.
A former Vice President of the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU), Prof Abu Sayeed was elected as a Member of Parliament from the Pabna-1
constituency under the Awami League banner. He later remained largely inactive in frontline politics for several years.
BNP leaders welcomed his joining, describing it as a boost to the party ahead of the upcoming national election. Party insiders say Prof Abu Sayeed’s experience in governance and constitutional affairs could play an important role in BNP’s policy formulation and political outreach.
Prof Abu Sayeed has not yet made a formal statement outlining the reasons behind his decision to join BNP.
