Jara challenges rejection of nomination
Staff Reporter :
Independent candidate Tasnim Jara from the Dhaka-9 constituency has lodged an appeal against the rejection of her nomination papers.
The former NCP leader submitted the appeal shortly before 4:00pm on Monday.
Speaking to reporters after filing the appeal, Jara said, “I have challenged the decision to cancel my nomination. In just one and a half days, more than 5,000 people voluntarily signed in support of my candidacy.
Their overwhelming response has inspired volunteers to set up booths, and we will continue our legal battle in honour of this support.”
She added, “My supporters want me to remain in the race. That is why I have filed this appeal and will pursue every available legal avenue.”
Her lawyer, Arman Hossain, outlined the technical grounds behind the appeal.
“We submitted the mandatory list containing signatures of 1% of registered voters, as required under the Election Management Act. The information provided is entirely accurate.
However, at the time of collecting signatures, the Election Commission’s website was inaccessible, making it impossible to verify whether each signatory was registered in Dhaka-9. The voter ID cards clearly indicated Dhaka-9 as their constituency. Since online verification was not feasible then, this matter will now be resolved through due legal process.”
The Election Commission has established 10 regional appeal booths at the Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon. Candidates may submit appeals until 5:00pm on January 9.
