Khaleda’s health condition stable: Dr. Zahid

Staff Reporter :

BNP Chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia is showing a positive response to treatment, and doctors remain hopeful that her physical condition will gradually improve, her personal physician has said.

Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, also a member of the BNP Standing Committee, shared the update while speaking to reporters outside Evercare Hospital in the capital on Thursday.

He expressed optimism, saying Khaleda Zia is recovering under close medical supervision and following the prescribed treatment plan, with her condition remaining stable over the past few days.

Dr Zahid added that she is expected to recover and resume her appropriate role in the country’s political life.

However, he alleged that inadequate medical care during her time in prison had significantly worsened her health, leaving her in a particularly vulnerable state.

Addressing party activists, he urged them to remain calm and cooperative, noting that Evercare Hospital is a medical facility open to all patients.

He also said law enforcement agencies are assisting to ensure that medical services are not disrupted and that everyone has equal access to treatment.

Khaleda Zia has been in critical condition at Evercare Hospital since late November, where she is receiving intensive care and is currently on elective ventilator support due to multiple serious complications.

She has long been suffering from several chronic and complex ailments, including liver complications, kidney disease, heart problems, hypertension, diabetes, arthritis and recurrent infections.

While staying at her Gulshan residence, she recently developed shortness of breath, cough, fever and increasing weakness.

As her condition deteriorated, she was admitted to Evercare Hospital on 23 November.

Following medical examinations, doctors observed a rapid decline in the functioning of her lungs, heart and kidneys, prompting her immediate transfer from a cabin to the Critical Care Unit for advanced treatment and continuous monitoring.
