Maulana Karim calls for justice, public welfare

Maulana M. A. Karim Ibn Mosobbir, a former central leader of Bangladesh Hefazat-e-Islam and a participant in the 2013 Shapla Chattar movement, has called for a broader approach to national development, saying economic growth alone is not enough.

Karim says justice, good governance, equal opportunities and public welfare must remain at the centre of Bangladesh’s development.

His supporters describe him as a close confidant of former BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and an outspoken columnist who faced imprisonment over his political views and writings during the then Sheikh Hasina government.

Karim was also imprisoned over the 2013 Shapla Chattar movement and later lived abroad amid political instability.

His supporters now say his political experience and commitment to public service could be utilised in national policymaking and governance, with some calling for him to be considered for a significant government responsibility, including a cabinet position.
