Over 20 lakh taxpayers file e-returns in current tax year

More than 20 lakh taxpayers have filed income tax returns online so far in the current 2025-26 tax year.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) gave this information in a press release on Saturday.
The release said that since the Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed inaugurated the e-return filing program through the website www.etaxnbr.gov.bd on August 4, taxpayers have been responding very positively.
As a result, the number of e-return filers has crossed 20 lakh within three months.
The NBR said that through a special order, all other persons except senior taxpayers aged 65 years or above, physically disabled or special needs taxpayers, Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad, legal representatives of deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals working in the country have been made mandatory to file returns online this year.
However, exempted taxpayers can also submit e-returns if they wish.In case of problems with registration in the e-return system, taxpayers can apply to the concerned Excise Commissioner by December 15, citing reasonable reasons.
If approved, they will have the opportunity to submit paper returns.The notification further states that this time, authorized representatives of taxpayers can also submit e-returns.
Although there is no obligation for taxpayers residing abroad, if they send their passport number, national identity card number, and e-mail address to [email protected], an OTP and registration link will be sent to their e-mail.
Taxpayers can pay income tax through mobile financial services, debit/credit cards, or internet banking by entering the income, expenditure, assets, and liabilities information system without uploading any documents.
After filing the return, they can print the acknowledgement slip and tax certificate online themselves, which has made e-return popular in the country and abroad, the NBR said.
This year too, taxpayers, lawyers, chartered accountants, cost and management accountants, and chartered secretaries have been trained to make e-returns easier.
The NBR said that the call center at 09643-71-71-71 is providing round-the-clock support for any assistance related to e-returns.
In addition, immediate solutions are being provided if problems are reported on the e-tax service portal.E-return help desks are also operating in tax areas across the country.
Through the notification, the NBR has urged all individual taxpayers to file e-returns by December 31.
