Monorail to save time, ease traffic

A coordination meeting on the feasibility study for the implementation of the monorail project in Chattogram city was held at the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Rest House premises. The meeting was presided over by CCC Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain.

Present at the meeting were Amir Humayun Mahmud Chowdhury, President of the Greater Chattogram Economic Forum; Faisal Rahman, Chief Coordinator of the Monorail Project; Kausar Ahmed Chowdhury, Country Director of Arab Contractors and Orascom Construction Company; Kamran Anwar Nagiv, Project Consultant; and Abu Sadat Md Tayyab, Supervising Engineer and Coordinator of the Project, CCC.

It was informed at the meeting that initially, the feasibility study is being conducted on four possible routes.

Of these, 26.5 kilometres will be built from Kalurghat to the airport (via Bahaddarhat, Chawkbazar, Lalkhan Bazar, Dewanhat and Patenga); 13.5 kilometres from City Gate to Shahid Bashiruzzaman Chattar (via A K Khan, Nimtali, Sadarghat and Firingi Bazar); and 14.5 kilometres from Oxygen to Firingi Bazar (via Muradpur, Panchlaish, Andarkilla and Kotwali).

As the fourth route, a 10.9 km railway line will be built from City Gate to Nimtala via Port Connecting Road and Agrabad Access.

CCC Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain said, “Considering the population and traffic congestion of Chattogram, a modern solution is essential in the public transport system.

If the monorail project is implemented, city residents will have the opportunity to travel safely, punctually and comfortably.”
