DSCC plans to shift long-haul buses to Kanchpur

Long-haul buses operating from Sayedabad Bus Terminal will soon be shifted to the under-construction Kanchpur terminal as part of a plan to ease traffic congestion and bring greater order to Dhaka’s public transport system, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Md Abdus Salam said on Wednesday.

The DSCC administrator disclosed the plan after inspecting the ongoing construction work at the Kanchpur Bus Terminal on Wednesday.

Narayanganj-3 MP Azharul Islam Mannan, along with project officials and engineers, was present during the inspection.

Abdus Salam said the terminal was being developed to implement the Prime Minister’s directive on modernising Dhaka’s traffic system.

“Initially, a temporary shed will be constructed and buses operating on long-haul routes to 16 districts, including Chattogram, Sylhet, Cumilla and Noakhali, will be shifted from Sayedabad to Kanchpur. Permanent infrastructure will be developed here later,” he said.

He said moving long-haul buses out of the main city would significantly reduce traffic congestion in Dhaka.

The DSCC administrator said the city corporation planned to introduce a special shuttle service between Kanchpur and Sayedabad for passengers travelling to and from the capital.

The service would be introduced after discussions with transport owners, he said.
He also said the process of acquiring land was underway to relocate the Gulistan Bus Terminal to the other side of the Buriganga.

Abdus Salam said the Kanchpur terminal was being constructed at an estimated cost of around Tk50 crore under three packages.

The project has achieved an overall average progress of 30 per cent. Construction of the boundary wall is 75 per cent complete, while work on the internal platform has reached 25 per cent.

If weather conditions remain favourable, the initial construction work is expected to be completed and the terminal opened by December this year, he said.

The terminal is being built on around 12 acres of land and will have capacity for about 405 buses.
During the inspection, the DSCC administrator instructed engineers and contractors to ensure the quality of construction, complete the work within the stipulated time and avoid using any substandard construction materials.
