Readers’ Voice: Merit Is Essential

Every year, thousands of talented young people secure places at prestigious universities overseas from Bangladesh.

While some intend to return, many choose to settle permanently in their host countries. The reasons are clear: better career prospects, higher salaries, advanced research facilities, merit-based recruitment, and a stable political and economic climate.

The loss is immense. These students are among our brightest minds, educated at significant personal and national expense. When they remain abroad, the country forfeits their skills, innovation, entrepreneurship, and potential contributions to development.

The government must create incentives for returnees: competitive salaries, transparent hiring, research grants, and a stable socio-economic environment. Universities and industries should collaborate to provide opportunities that meet international standards. Above all, a culture that genuinely values merit is essential.
