Govt cautions media on fascist speech

The interim government has issued a statement to media outlets against publishing statements from deposed Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina, currently in India following her removal during last year’s mass uprising. The move comes as Bangladesh prepares for its upcoming parliamentary elections, described by officials as the first genuinely free and fair polls in generations.
In a statement released on Friday, the Chief Adviser’s office said broadcasting or disseminating audio messages from Sheikh Hasina – convicted of criminal offences and facing trial for crimes against humanity and genocide – through television, online platforms, or other news outlets would constitute a serious violation of the 2009 Anti-Terrorism Act.
The statement recalled that in December, the International Crimes Tribunal had prohibited the broadcast of speeches inciting hatred by the former leader. Officials expressed concern that some media outlets had recently disregarded these legal directives by airing a speech containing what the CA office described as false and provocative claims.
“At this critical moment in our nation’s history, we cannot afford unnecessary confusion,” the statement said. “Any future publication of Sheikh Hasina’s statements will result in immediate legal action. Media officials are urged to exercise caution and responsibility.”
The interim government emphasised that Sheikh Hasina fled Bangladesh following allegations of ordering violence against peaceful demonstrators during the July uprising. Her activities, along with those of the Awami League, are prohibited under national law, and promoting or broadcasting her statements may lead to legal consequences.
The statement highlighted the government’s commitment, under Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, to guiding Bangladesh toward justice, accountability, and democratic integrity. Officials stressed that dissemination or promotion of Sheikh Hasina’s statements threatens national stability during the democratic transition and serves only to mislead the public.
Media outlets found in violation of these restrictions will face immediate legal accountability, the statement warned. As Bangladesh gears up for its historic elections, authorities are calling on journalists and broadcasters to uphold the law and ensure accurate, responsible reporting during this critical period.
