3 injured in Dasar rabid dog attacks

Three people, including a lecturer and an office assistant of Dasar Government Women’s College, were injured in a rabid dog bites in the Betbari area of Dasar upazila in Madaripur district. The incidents have sparked panic among the local residents.

Dasar Government Women’s College Acting Principal Zakia Sultana confirmed the matter on Thursday morning.

According to college and local sources, Nurul Islam, a lecturer in logic at Dasar Government Women’s College, was heading to the nearby Baitul Nur-e Jame Mosque to offer prayers when a dog suddenly attacked and bit him before fleeing.

Dr Md Sirajul Islam, livestock officer responsible for Dasar and Kalkini upazilas, said the number of stray dogs in the area had increased and reports of people being injured in dog attacks were received frequently. “There is a court injunction against culling dogs,” he said.

He said similar incidents had occurred in Dasar in the past and that taking effective measures to rescue or control stray dogs was difficult due to a lack of necessary equipment and adequate manpower.

Two days earlier, college office assistant Md Kasem Sardar was also injured after being bitten by a rabid dog at the same location while he was going out to offer Maghrib prayers. In addition, a local resident, Ismail Hawladar, was injured in a rabid dog attack.

The incidents have caused panic among local residents, including children and teenagers.
Locals alleged that the number of stray dogs in the area has been increasing day by day.

Local resident Tuhin Mridha said there are two educational institutions located next to each other in Dasar, with a large number of students staying in their hostels.

“As stray dogs gather in the area in search of leftover food from the hostels, students and local residents have to move around in fear,” he said.
