College student ‘commits suicide’ in Magura
MAGURA:A college student allegedly committed suicide by taking poison at Balidia village in Mohammadpur upazila on Sunday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Bithun Khatun, 17, daughter of Biplob Biswas and a 1st year student of Mohammadpur Women’s College. Police said Bithun took poison in her room in the afternoon after a quarrel with her mother and fell sick. Later she was rushed to Magura Sadar Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. An UD case was filed in this connection. Ataur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Mohammadpur Police Station, confirmed the incident, reports UNB.
Mother’s Day observed in Barisal

The World Mother’s Day was observed in Barisal on Sunday calling to make the society women friendly because if the mother would be delighted, then the child would be manifested’ (Ma Holey Ullasito, Shishu Hobey Bikashito).Bangladesh Girl Guides Association organised a programmes on this occasion at Gournadi Pilot School and Barisal Islamia College on Sunday morning and afternoon.Gathering and reception of mothers, awarding for best motherhood, discussion and quiz competition on role of mothers in raring children especially the daughters, arranged in the programmes. Masud Hasan Patowary, Gournadi upazila nirbahi officer, and Prof. Mohsin Ul Islam Habul, acting principal Barisal Islamia College, were chief guests in the programmes respectively presided over by Nigar Sultana, local girl guides commissioner of Gournadi and Prof. Dinara Begum, Ranger-teacher of Barisal Islamia College.
Old man electrocuted in the city
An old man died after electrocuted at Band Road area of the city on Monday morning. The victim was identified as Kalu Sardar, 74, owner of a three-storied building, at the area adjacent to an ice-factory. Another one received injuries during the same incident and admitted in Barisal Sher-e- Bangla Medical College Hospital. Local sources said Kalu Sardar, doing work with a labour to install water supply pipe line for curing the newly constructed roof of his building at 11:30 am. At that time the iron pipe of water supply line touched the high voltage electricity supply line of the adjacent road.

Man held with 170 bottles of phensidyl in Sirajganj

Police arrested a man with 170 bottles of phensidyl from Jati Kumrul Gol Chattar area of Sadar upazila on Sunday noon. The arrested was identified as Abul Kalam, son of Kalu Sheikh, a resident of Char Goja village in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia district. On a tip off, a team of police conducted a drive in a bus on Dhaka-Bogra highway at Jati Kumrul Gol Chattar in Sirajganj Sadar upazila and arrested Abul kalam on Sunday noon, said Rezaul Haque, officier-in-charge of Solonga Police Station. Police recovered 170 phensidyl bottles after searching his bag. A case was filed in this connection.
Arms recovered in C’nawabganj

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh in a drive recovered a pistol and one round of bullet from Shingnagar border area in Shibganj upazila on Sunday night. Minnat Ali, additional director of BGB battalion 9, said on a tip off a team of BGB conducted a drive in the area around 10pm. They challenged two people who were entering Bangladesh from India through the area. Sensing presence of the BGB personnel, they fled from the scene leaving a black bag. Searching the BGB personnel recovered arms.
