Main accused in Raihan murder case SI akbar granted bail in Sylhet

SI Akbar Hossain, the main accused in the Raihan murder case, who was tortured to death at a sensational police outpost in Sylhet, has been granted six-month interim bail by the High Court.

He was released from Sylhet Metropolitan Jail this evening after receiving bail on Sunday (August 10) morning.

Senior Jail Superintendent of Sylhet Metropolitan Jail Prashant Kumar Banik confirmed the bail of SI Akbar Hossain and his release from prison.

Upon receiving the news of the bail, the mother of the deceased Raihan said, “Now this accused can leave the country. We are disappointed with his bail.”

The testimony in this sensational murder case has already been concluded and the verdict was expected to be announced any day. In the meantime, SI Akbar has been granted bail and the family of the deceased Raihan fears that he will leave the country soon.

It is worth noting that Raihan Ahmed was taken to the Bandar Bazar outpost of Sylhet Metropolitan Police on the midnight of October 10, 2020 and tortured. Later, Raihan died on October 11.

Raihan’s wife filed a case under the Custodial Death (Prevention) Act in this incident.

The accused in this case, Ashiq Elahi, may also get bail in a couple of days. And all the other accused are currently absconding. One of them is in America, one is in France and two are in the Middle East, a source said.

Four people, including SI Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan, who was in charge of the outpost, were suspended on October 12 of the same year and three others were withdrawn. After that, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested three people, including Constable Harun, from police custody. The main accused Akbar was arrested from the Kanaighat border in Sylhet on November 9.

Later, the PBI submitted the charge sheet in the case to the court on May 5, 2021. In this, SI Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan (32), in-charge of Bandar Bazar police outpost, was named as the main accused.

The others are Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Ashek Elahi (43), Constable Md. Harun Or Rashid (32), Titu Chandra Das (38), SI Md. Hasan Uddin (32) and SI Akbar’s relative Abdullah Al Noman (32), a journalist from Companiganj Upazila.
