Costing Tk 8.7m comes off in 15 days
In the Kishamat Sherpur area of Betgari Union in Gangachara Upazila of Rangpur, the carpeting work costing about 8.7 million taka has started coming off in various places within just 15 days of its completion.
Somewhere there are big holes, somewhere there are cracks; and somewhere else the pitch and holes of the carpeting have come off. The locals are angry with the condition of the road implemented with government funds.
It can be seen on the ground that the carpeting has come off in various places on the road, creating small and big holes.
In some places, the bitumen and stone layers have come off. In addition, the edging bricks on both sides of the road are in a higher position than the original carpeting.
Signs of rainwater accumulating in the middle of the road have also been seen in some places. According to relevant sources, in the 2025-26 fiscal year, under the Periodic Maintenance Program (PMP) of the Roads and Highways (SOH) Department, the contractor Hossain Traders and Corporation implemented the carpeting work on the road in an area of 2,600 square meters at a cost of about 87 lakh 53 thousand taka.
Local resident Majnu Mia said, the road, which was built at the expense of lakhs of taka by the government, did not last even for 15 days.
The pitch comes out when you rub it with your hand. We have never seen such work before. Those involved in this work should be held accountable.
Another resident Abdul Kader said, bricks have been placed so high on both sides of the road that water cannot drain easily. Rainwater is accumulating in the middle, destroying the new road.
Even the common people can understand that it has been done wrong.
So how did the responsible officials accept this work? Betgari Union Parishad Chairman Mohaiminul Islam Maruf said, I have asked the contractor to work well several times. But he did not listen to me.
In this regard, contractor Redwan Iqbal of the contracting company Hossain Traders and Corporation said, this problem has arisen due to working in heavy rain.
Rangpur Sewage Sub-Engineer Anwarul Azam said, this situation has arisen due to hasty work due to rain.
The damaged part will be renovated again. Rangpur Sewage Executive Engineer Moniruzzaman said, the bricks of the edging should be below the main carpeting, so that rainwater can be drained easily.
Here, since the bricks are high, water is accumulating in the middle and damaging the carpeting. This is not technically acceptable. The matter will be investigated and necessary action will be taken against the responsible persons.
