Spirit of July must guide national reform: President
NN Online:
President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Monday called for the complete uprooting of fascist elements and full realisation of the spirit of the July Uprising to build a just, democratic, and prosperous Bangladesh.
In a message marking **July Mass Uprising Day**, the President said, “The July Uprising was a powerful expression of the youth and people’s rage against prolonged injustice, misrule, corruption, looting, enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, abductions, and the suppression of fundamental rights, including voting.”
He stressed that the uprising aimed to dismantle the oppressive fascist structure, re-establish democracy, restore people’s rights, and guarantee freedom of expression.
President Shahabuddin expressed hope that the ideals of the July Uprising would guide national reforms, paving the way for a truly democratic Bangladesh rooted in justice and equality.
“Today marks the historic July Uprising Day. On this day in 2024, students, workers, and citizens rose in unison against the discriminatory state system and fascist repression, achieving a significant victory,” he said.
The President extended heartfelt greetings to all freedom-loving students and citizens and paid solemn tribute to the martyrs of the uprising who laid down their lives in the struggle to liberate the nation from authoritarian rule.
He also offered prayers for the eternal peace of those who died and remembered with deep gratitude the sacrifices of all who were injured, disabled, or lost their eyesight during the movement.
“Ensuring justice for the families of the martyrs and the injured is a sacred duty of the state, and we are committed to fulfilling it,” he affirmed.
President Shahabuddin concluded by wishing all programmes undertaken in observance of the July Mass Uprising Day every success.
