Khaleda Zia to virtually address BNP’s programme marking July-August uprising

NN Online:
BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia will virtually address a major discussion today (Tuesday) as the party kicks off its 36-day programme to commemorate the first anniversary of the July-August mass uprising.

The event, titled ‘Mass Uprising 2024: National Unity and Democratic Journey’, will take place at the China-Bangladesh Friendship Conference Centre in the capital, beginning at 3 PM.

Sayrul Kabir Khan, a member of BNP’s media cell, confirmed that BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman will inaugurate the event virtually from the United Kingdom. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will join as special guest, while Senior Joint Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi will preside over the session.

Family members of those killed in political movements—especially during last year’s uprising—will also speak at the event, paying tribute to the sacrifices made for democracy.

This discussion marks the beginning of BNP’s extensive programme titled ‘July-August Uprising: Mourning and Victory Observance’, which will run from July 1 to August 6. The commemorative campaign includes rallies, discussion meetings, blood donation drives, street theatre, football tournaments, children’s events, and public awareness initiatives on dengue and COVID-19.

On June 26, the party officially announced the series of events to mark the anniversary of the mass uprising that, according to BNP, led to the ouster of Sheikh Hasina’s autocratic regime on August 5, 2024.

Senior leaders of other political parties, civil society members, and victims’ families have been invited to attend today’s programme.
