Surrounding design of Zia’s grave partially damaged

Unidentified miscreants partially damaged the surrounding design of the BNP founder and late President Ziaur Rahman in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar sometimes on Wednesday night.
At least 12 marble stones from the main altar of the grave were pulled out. Mizanur Rahman, a sweeper of the area, said that they took away four stones and the rest were broken into pieces around 6:00 on Thursday. It was known that there were 118 marble plates on the surrounding structure of the tomb.
Meanwhile, a team of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, led by Officer-in-Charge Ganesh Gopal Biswas, visited the spot at noon. The OC informed the officials of the Department of Housing and Public Works about the incident. Later, an official of the department also visited the spot and asked employees of the department to repair the surrounding structure of the grave.
A delegation of the BNP, led by the party’s Standing Committee Member Lt General (Retd) Mahbubur Rahman, visited the spot. Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal and some other party leaders also went there.
BNP claimed that criminals damaged the design of the grave with an ulterior motive. “The incident in the grave of Ziaur Rahman is a mysterious, as it happened in a highly secure and sensitive area near the Ganabhaban, the official residence of Prime Minister, and Sangsad Bhaban. It is part of conspiracy. It won’t be tolerated, as the spirit of the Liberation War the grave of a Sector Commander during the war of independence has been damaged. The anti-liberation force may have link to the incident,” Mahbubur Rahman told the reporters at the grave premises.
He demanded immediate arrest of those involved in the incident and exemplary punishment to them.
“We think that the incident is an evil-designed conspiracy. The attacks on BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s motorcade during city polls campaign, snatching of people’s verdict in the polls and damaging Ziaur Rahman’s grave are inter-linked, ” BNP’s Assistant Publicity Secretary Imran Saleh Prince told reporters after visiting the spot along with the leaders of Muktijoddha Dal.
Meanwhile, pro-BNP lawyers staged a demonstration on the Supreme Court premises protesting the incident. Supreme Court lawyers Advocate Abed Raza, Dr Arifa Jesnin Nahin and others took part in the demonstration rally.  
On May 30, 1981, Ziaur Rahman was assassinated by a group of army officers at Chittagong Circuit House. Zia founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on September 1, 1978.
