CA stresses importance of accurate hydrographic data for national development

NN Online:

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has emphasized the critical need for accurate hydrographic data to support national development, particularly in harnessing the economic potential of the Bay of Bengal.

In a message marking World Hydrography Day 2025, to be observed tomorrow, Prof Yunus stated that accurate, detailed, and updated hydrographic information is essential not only for Bangladesh but also for neighboring countries that rely on the Bay of Bengal for economic growth, maritime security, and environmental sustainability.

“The Bay of Bengal holds immense significance for our national economy, security, and ecological balance,” said the Chief Adviser. “There is no alternative to precise hydrographic data in our efforts to utilize marine resources effectively and transform Bangladesh into a productive regional economic hub.”

He noted that the Hydrographic Department of the Bangladesh Navy plays a vital role in conducting surveys, preparing nautical charts, ensuring the safety of domestic and international vessels, and exchanging data in line with international standards.

Citing the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the Chief Adviser underscored the importance of the department’s work in determining the nation’s oceanic shelf and advancing the blue economy.

Prof Yunus expressed hope that, beyond its contributions to naval security, the Hydrographic Department would take on a more proactive role in the development of seaports, conservation of fishery resources, exploration of offshore oil and gas, and disaster risk management in coastal regions.

“To build a strong and resilient maritime economy, we must prioritize accurate seabed mapping and develop a comprehensive and sustainable maritime policy,” he said.

He called upon hydrographic professionals in the country to carry out their responsibilities with enhanced professionalism, dedication, and efficiency to establish a complete and reliable hydrographic database of Bangladesh’s maritime territory.

Joining the global observance, the Chief Adviser conveyed his heartfelt greetings to everyone involved in the celebration of World Hydrography Day 2025 and wished success for all associated programs.

This year, the day will be observed under the theme: ‘Seabed Mapping: Enabling Ocean Action’.
