Listed criminal ‘Dhakaiya Akbar’ dies after being shot in Chattogram
NN Online:
Ali Akbar, widely known as ‘Dhakaiya Akbar’ and a top-listed criminal in Chattogram, has died after being shot by unidentified assailants at Patenga Sea Beach on May 23. He passed away early Sunday morning while undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
Nurul Alam Asheq, in-charge of the CMCH police outpost, confirmed that Akbar succumbed to his injuries in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) around 8:00 AM.
Akbar was shot while chatting with friends at a local shop on the beach. During the incident, four youths on two motorcycles opened fire, also injuring two bystanders — Jannatul Baki, 30, and Mahim Islam Ratul, 8 — both of whom were visiting as tourists.
The deceased, a resident of the Bayezid Bostami area, had been accused in at least 10 criminal cases, including charges of murder, extortion, and illegal arms possession. He was considered a rival of notorious criminals Sajjad Hossain and Sarwar Hossain.
Akbar frequently shared videos on Facebook taunting Sajjad and his wife, Tamanna Sharmin. In response, Tamanna also posted threatening videos aimed at Akbar. Sajjad was previously arrested on March 15 from a shopping mall in Dhaka.
Despite the violent nature of the shooting, no suspects have yet been identified, and no case had been filed as of Sunday morning.
However, Officer-in-Charge of Patenga Police Station, Shafiqul Islam, stated that a case would now be filed following Akbar’s death.
