In a bold move to reshape the future of Bangladesh, leaders of the newly formed National Citizen Party (NCP) have called for a Constituent Assembly election to draft a new constitution, which they envision as the foundation for the country’s “second republic”.
The demand was made public at the party’s official launch event today (28 February) at Manik Mia Avenue in the capital, with NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain articulating the party’s vision. “The future Bangladesh will be governed by a new constitution, and to make that a reality, I am calling for the election of a Constituent Assembly,” he stated.
Echoing similar sentiments, NCP Convener Nahid Islam stressed that the July uprising symbolised the beginning of their
struggle to create the second republic. “By drafting a new democratic constitution, we aim to eradicate the possibility of returning to a system of constitutional autocracy,” he explained. “Holding an elected Constituent Assembly to frame the new constitution is a key goal for us.”
Nahid Islam passionately expressed that the dream of a “second republic” in Bangladesh is no longer a distant aspiration. “This is the time to dream of a new future, to unite in building the Bangladesh we desire. Our second republic is not an unattainable dream; it is a solemn promise we make,” he said.
The NCP’s vision for the second republic centres on ensuring that the voices of marginalised communities are heard and that power rests solely in the hands of the people. “We aim to create a society where the democratic and fundamental rights of all individuals are strongly protected,” said Nahid. “In our second republic, ethnic, social, gender, religious, and cultural diversity will be upheld, and no citizen will be excluded from state protection.”
The party also outlined a vision for a stronger Bangladesh, where national interests are safeguarded by a robust defence system and where political, social, economic, and cultural institutions are rebuilt with a firm commitment to democracy.
Nahid emphasised the NCP’s desire for a political culture that values unity over division, justice over revenge, and meritocracy over dynastic rule. “Our politics will have no place for corruption or nepotism,” he asserted.
With the call for a new constitution and the creation of a second republic, the NCP reaffirms its dedication to building a Bangladesh based on justice, equality, and the unwavering protection of human dignity. The July uprising, according to Nahid, was not only a victory against fascism but a pivotal moment that marked the beginning of a movement to shape a better future for the nation.
