NCP issues show-cause notice

The National Citizen Party (NCP) has temporarily suspended its central committee Joint Member Secretary, Gazi Salahuddin Tanvir, and issued him a show-cause notice after he made objectionable remarks about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in a social media post.

The disciplinary action was taken on Friday night, hours after Tanvir’s Facebook post sparked widespread criticism online.

Under the notice, Tanvir has been asked to submit a written explanation, supported by relevant evidence, to the party’s central disciplinary committee within two working days of receiving the letter, stating why further organisational action should not be taken against him.

The controversial post referred to attacks on and obstruction of NCP marches in three districts of the Sylhet division, including Habiganj, where Tanvir alleged the involvement of leaders and activists of Chhatradal and Jubo Dal.

In the same post, he made objectionable comments about the Prime Minister. Although the post was deleted a few hours later following a public backlash, screenshots continued to circulate widely on social media.

In a letter published on the NCP’s verified Facebook page, the party said the remarks attributed to Tanvir amounted to “a serious organisational breach of discipline and damaging the party’s image on social media.”

The letter stated that, considering the seriousness of the incident, Tanvir had been immediately relieved of his organisational responsibilities on the instructions of NCP Convener Nahid Islam and Member Secretary Akhter Hossen.

The latest action marks the second time Tanvir has been suspended by the party.
He was first suspended in April 2025 amid allegations that he attempted to influence appointments of deputy commissioners after entering the Secretariat in the aftermath of the July mass uprising.

He was also accused of involvement in commission-related dealings over textbook printing contracts with the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB).

Tanvir remained outside the party for approximately one year before being reinstated on 16 April this year. His latest suspension comes around three and a half months after his return to the organisation.

Shortly after the controversy emerged, Tanvir posted a separate message on his personal Facebook account expressing regret over his remarks.
