CLASP supports BSTI to formulate energy saving MEPS policies

CLASP, an international NGO based in Washington D.C.,is supporting Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI), to formulate energy saving Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) policies for LED lamps annd luminaires. The new policies are predicted to save Bangladeshi consumers $1.8 billion USD and lower CO2 emissions by 22.8 million tons by 2040.

CLASP in collaboration with BSTI organized a technical workshop on “Development of Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for LED Lamps and Luminaires” at hotel “The Westin Dhaka” in the capital recently.

The workshop was attended by Ms. Maqsura Noor, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Industries as the Chief Guest and BSTI Director General S M Ferdous Alam, as the special guest.

The workshop also invited participating government agencies, private sector and industry, and academia to collaborate on strategies forenergy saving MEPS policy adoption.

CLASP Senior Associate, Climate, Asif Hassan, presented on the outcomes of a comprehensive lighting market assessment and provided evidence to support development of MEPS policies, in favor of more energy efficient LEDs.”Quality of LED lighting products remains a major concern fand responsible for market distortion in Bangladesh.

By enforcing energy saving MEPS policies, the country can restrict low-quality LED lighting products from flooding the local markets and avoid becoming a dumping ground for other countries”, said Hassan.
