Yunus with Al Jazeera: Four years the longest before elections are held

Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has stated that the interim government aims to hold the next general election in less than four years, although the exact timeframe has not been set.
During an interview with Qatar-based media Al Jazeera on Sunday, Dr. Yunus clarified that while the maximum duration for the interim government could be up to four years, it is not their intention to remain in power for that long.
He emphasised that the goal is to hold the election as soon as possible.
Dr. Yunus explained that the constitution may recommend a four-year term, but the interim government’s duration will depend on the needs and demands of the people and political parties.
He also assured that he would not contest in the upcoming election, stating, “I am not a politician.
In this stage of my life, I am not going to change that.”
Addressing the challenges faced by the interim government, Dr. Yunus acknowledged the depth of corruption and mismanagement in the country, particularly over the last 15 years.
He stressed that reforming the system will be a monumental task, requiring efforts sector by sector.
On the issue of election preparedness, Dr. Yunus pledged that the election will only be held after completing necessary reforms.
He appealed for patience from the public, stating that the Election Commission will soon be formed and will take responsibility for organizing the elections.
He also mentioned that once electoral reforms are decided, a roadmap for the elections will be announced.
Dr. Yunus made these statements as the interim government marked its first 100 days in office.
