EC’s directives to other bodies ahead of CC polls

The Election Commission (EC) on Monday sent letters to the Bangladesh Bank and the Bank and Financial
Institutions Division seeking information of loan defaulters, as well as keeping the scheduled banks open on weekly holidays ahead of three city corporation election, slated for April 28.
As per the electoral rules, no loan defaulter is eligible to contest the elections.
The commission also sent letters signed by EC secretary Sirazul Islam to the LGED ministry, the Public Administration Ministry, the Cabinet Division, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Chittagong
Metropolitan Police (CMP) giving some directives regarding the elections, said an official of EC Secretariat seeking anonymity.
The EC asked the LGRD ministry not to provide fresh development allocations in the election areas, and the DMP and CMP to assist magistrates, deployed to curb violations of the electoral code of conduct.
The Election Commission earlier asked the government to deploy a total of 18 executive magistrates -six magistrates in each city corporation-in the election areas initially.
Besides, the commission sought necessary manpower from the public administration ministry for election duties and asked not to transfer any government officials in the election areas without consent of the commission.
On March 18, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed announced election schedules for Dhaka South City Corporation, Dhaka North City Corporation and Chittagong City Corporation, fixing vote on April 28.
According to the schedules, the deadline for submission of nomination papers is March 29 while the nomination papers will be scrutinised on April 1 and 2 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is April 9.
