‘Need for disseminating agriculture information through mass media’

Speakers at a training course here have asked the concerned officials for attaining skills in preparing news stories, features and press releases on agricultural information for disseminating those through mass media.
Effective and quicker dissemination of the latest agricultural information among the farmers utilising the print, electronic, online and community media and Information Communication Technology could help increasing crop production to ensure national food security, they said.
The observations came at the inaugural session of a 3-day training course on “Preparation of Effective Content for Agricultural Information Dissemination through Mass Media” at NCDP conference room here yesterday afternoon.
The Intensification of Agriculture Information Service (IAIS) in 10 Agriculture Regions Project of the Agriculture Information Service under the Agriculture Ministry organised the course.
Thirty officials of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Pisciculture and Animal Resources Departments, Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation, Soil Resources Development Institute and other government and non-government organisations participated.
Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension Hazrat Ali addressed the session as chief guest while Deputy Director (Mass Communications) of AIS Dr Jahangir Alam and its Agriculture Information and Communication Specialist Muhammad Maroof spoke as special guests with Anjan Kumar Barua, Director of IAIS Project, in the chair.
The speakers viewed that an effective and rapid dissemination of the latest agricultural information to the farmers through newspapers, television, and community radio and information communication technology could increase crop production to ensure national food security.
They stressed for enhancing knowledge and expertise of the agriculture related officers on ‘e-Agriculture’ and capacity building for reaching necessary information at the farmers’ doorsteps utilizing the digitised ICT facilities easily in a hassle-free manner.
The farmers contribute maximum through enhancing agri- productions to ensure national food security by realising the Vision 2021 as envisioned by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina if they got the latest agro-technology at their doorsteps, they said.
They said the farmers have been getting their necessary information on agriculture from the Union Digital Centres set up under the UNDP assisted Access to Information Programme of the Prime Minister’s Office everywhere in the country.
The farmers would easily get tremendous benefits of ‘e-Agriculture’ like proper managements of crops, pesticides, crop diseases, nutrition of crop plants, seed sowing periods, homestead and roof gardening,animal husbandry at their doorsteps, they added.
The participants were provided practical training on techniques and basic rules for preparing news stories, features and press releases, scripts for radio, interviewing and presentation of different agricultural information, technologies and issues.
The resource persons also informed the participants about the ways for quicker and effective dissemination of the agricultural information and latest technologies utilising the country’s mass media.
Course Coordinator and Rajshahi Regional Agricultural Information Officer Amirul Islam delivered the welcome speech.
