Ex-RAB men produced in court sans handcuffs

The prosecution on Wednesday raised objection before the court over the stance of the police while producing three detained dismissed Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) officials without handcuffs ignoring the Jail Code in the sensational seven-murder case amid tight security.
The three accused and dismissed elite force RAB-11 officials-Lt Col Tareque Sayed, Maj Arif Hossain and Commander SM Rana-already made their confessional statements before a magistrate in connection with the grisly killings.
Police, however, produced the remaining 27 accused in the dock following the Jail Code.
Responding to the prosecution objection, senior judicial magistrate HM Shafiqul Islam asked the police to comply with the prescribed Jail Code in this regard from now on.
“All are equal in the eye of law. But it’s not lawful the way the three people despite accused have been produced in the dock,” said the court, fixing May 11 for the next routine date of hearing.
During the proceedings, lawyers brought out a procession on the court compound demanding capital punishment of the killers, said court police inspector Habibur Rahman Habib.
On April 27 last year, Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam and his three associates and driver were abducted from Fatullah area in Narayanganj city. At the same time, senior lawyer of the Narayanganj District Judge’s Court, Chandan Kumar Sarkar, and his driver were abducted on their way to capital Dhaka.
Three days into their abduction, the bodies of six people, including that of Nazrul and Chandan, were recovered from the Shitalakhya River on April 30. Besides, the body of Jahangir, the car driver of Nazrul Islam, was recovered from the river the following day.
Two cases were filed in this regard, with another councillor of Narayanganj City Corporation Nur Hossain as the main accused, who was later held in Kolkata, the capital of Paschimbanga state of India.
