Dhaka courts operate on limited scale amid lack of security
City Desk :
Due to the absence of police, operations at Dhaka’s lower courts are limited due to a lack of security.
This situation was observed during a visit to the courts on Wednesday.
Some courts, including the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court, conducted trial proceedings in the courtroom, but all other courts gave orders sitting in the judge’s chamber.
Besides, some courts are conducting activities on a limited scale in the courtroom.
Meanwhile, there are four jails in the lower courts of Dhaka, but police were not seen at any of them. At present, these prisons are locked. Only a handful of policemen were seen in the GRO branches of the concerned police.
A police officer of the GRO branch, who did not want to be named, said: “Some of us have come, just to work on the bail issue of the accused. I’ll leave shortly.
The accused will not get bail without our signature, that’s why we had to come.”
An official of Dhaka’s Third Joint Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court said the judge would not appear before the court for security reasons. However, the request for attendance and time is being granted automatically.
The court is also granting bail applications sitting in the chamber.
Dhaka Judge Court’s lawyer Shahadat Hossain said: “Since August 5, many judges have been conducting the trial proceedings without getting up in the courtroom for the sake of security. In many cases, time petitions and bail hearings are not required.”
Earlier, different courts in Dhaka granted bail to more than 1,000 accused arrested since July 1. However, they did not go to the court due to insecurity.
No accused was brought from jail to the court. No witnesses, appearance or time pleas were heard.
Since the resignation of Sheikh Hasina on Monday, influential lawyer leaders have not been seen in the court premises in Dhaka.
