Staff Reporter :Bangladesh will celebrate the Tigers historic victory in the ICC World Cup Cricket against England today (Monday). Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has appealed to the countrymen to celebrate the victory with jubilation. Meanwhile, jubilant cricket fans–men and women of all ages–across the country became wild and took to the streets yesterday evening to celebrate Bangladesh Cricket team’s historic victory over England.In capital Dhaka, ecstatic fans flooded onto the streets, dancing, waving flags and splashing colours in celebration of the national team’s historic World Cup win over England. Besides, groups of fans drove the city’s streets waving flags and chanting slogans from car windows.People, belonging to all walks of life, who watched the Bangladesh- England cricket match in major cities, also took to the streets and celebrated Bangladesh’s victory.”I am here to cheer for our victory and forget about the cocktail and petrol bomb attacks,” Redwan Ahmed, a cricket fan, at TSC intersection, told The New Nation.He added: “I hope that this victory will help unite us”.Like Redwan, thousands of cricket fans gathered at TSC and Shahbagh in the evening to celebrate the victory. They were seen exchanging greetings to each other to share the joy. “I was very upset with the early fall of Kayes and Tamim’s wickets. I was in my class but not listening to the teacher. I had an earphone to listen to the cricket commentary on the radio. When Bangladesh lost early two wickets I thought our dream to reach the quarterfinals was going to over,” said Joyoti, a student of Dhaka University. Later, Bangladesh rebuilt their innings riding on brilliant hundred by Mahamudullah Riyad and Musfiq’s 89 runs. Bangladeshi players did well in fronts and secured the victory, she said. “Today is one of the happiest days in my life to see our heroes sealed a historic win leading Bangladesh into quarterfinals,” Monir Hossain, a businessman said, while shouting “Bangladesh….Bangladesh”.The victory against England was a gift for me and now I do not have any words to express my feelings, he added. “I was watching the game from the very first ball. When Bangladesh lost early two wickets, I was very disappointed,” another fan, Latif Biswas said.”Later, I saw Riyad and Musfiq were playing really well and I gathered the confidence as they would stay in wicket, we had a chance to set a winning total on the score board. They did it and the bowlers made the dream come true. Now I am very happy over the victory,” he added.President Advocate Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmeen Chaudhury, Opposition Leader Rawshan Ershad and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia issued separate statements extending congratulations to Bangladesh team and urged them to carry on their exploits in their next game.Bangladesh cricket team dedicated the historic win over England in the ICC World Cup Cricket to the freedom fighters.
