Cataract operation in one eye, but can’t see in both eyes

Tanvir Alam, Roving Correspondent (North Bengal) :
Sams Uddin is a poor grocer with a five-member family — wife, two sons and one daughter. Although he had eye problems for a long time, he could not get treatment due to lack of money.

With a lot of trouble, he somehow managed Tk 2,600 and underwent cataract surgery in one eye. But now he cannot see in both the eyes.

The incident took place at TMSS Hospital and Rafatullah Community Hospital located in Thengamara of Bogura district.

On July 26, Samas Uddin of Nandipur of Maidan Hatta Union of Shibganj Upazila of the district underwent cataract surgery. But a day later when his eye bandage was opened, he felt completely dark all around.

He lost the sight of his eyes. Sams Uddin exclaimed, “I used to see blur before I underwent eye surgery. Now I don’t know if I will see at all. How will I survive?”.

When asked what the doctor advised him in this situation, Sams Uddin said, “After seven days of medicine, I will look like before”.

The surgery was done by Professor Dr. SA Moqtad Raju, Head of Ophthalmology Department of TMSS Hospital and Rafatullah Community Hospital.

He said, the patient has cataracts in both eyes — more in the right eye and less in the left eye. The right eye was operated upon.

However, he claims that after the operation the patient was able to see. However, this ophthalmologist also said that this happened due to neurological problems.

When the director of the hospital, Matiur Rahman, was asked about the complaint against the doctor, he said the operation had been done.

The patient could definitely tell if he could see. However, he hoped that the hospital authorities would take appropriate measures for the better treatment of the patient.
