Sri Lanka to promote local tea in global fairs

Xinhua, Colombo :
The Sri Lankan tourism authorities Wednesday said that they will promote the country’s local tea at global travel and tourism fairs, including one in China that is scheduled to be held next week.
In a statement, the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) said that the bureau, whose focus is to drive Sri Lanka as a destination brand globally, had deiced to support Ceylon tea in each of the 47 key travel and tourism fairs, including the one in China next week, by featuring a tea bar in its stall.
The tie up between SLTPB and the Sri Lanka Tea Board will cost roughly 7.4 million U.S. dollars and this will be a part of the government’s efforts to boost visitor arrivals which registered only a 7 percent growth in January.
SLTPB Chairman Rohantha Athukorala said that a transparent process will be followed where Sri Lanka Tourism will formally write to the Tea Exporters Association on the key global fairs that Sri Lanka Tourism will take part in such as the one in China next week followed by the fairs in Moscow and Singapore.
The island’s tourism industry is currently the number one foreign exchange earner for the country and Athukorala said that the Sri Lanka Tourism will also look at supporting other key export products like apparel, Ceylon cinnamon and Ceylon sapphires to its Sri Lankan brand in the future.
