Speakers for honing local community skills

Experts urged for early forecasting and increasing the skills of local community to face flood. On Sunday (March 31) they said at the ‘Learning Sharing Workshop’ in the capital. At the workshop on ‘Community Oriented Localized Early Warning System in Flood’, speakers said that Teesta, Brahmaputra, Jamuna basin’s local community are suffering the most damage due to monsoon flood. As a result, people of these river basins are always deprived from the continuous development. Workshop’s Speakers advised to make local community efficient to flood management in national and regional challenges.
Mr. Zohirul Islam, the Additional Director General of Bangladesh Water Development Board, attended the workshop as the chief guest. Country Director of Concern Worldwide Mr. Manish Kumar Agrawal was the special guest at the workshop.
Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System- RIMES’ project coordinator Samia Jahan Chowdhury highlighted the initiatives for Teesta bank local community to face flood. She said that the project started from 1st May 2022 at the 6 unions of Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat district and Kapasia union of Sundarganj upazila under Gaibandha district. The project area was in the catchment of Teesta river. Information was taken from the upstream of Teesta Barrage and then it disseminated after the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre’s released. Beside dissemination, the community were trained to mange floods in project area.
Concern Worldwide in collaboration with Flood forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) and Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (RIMES) implemented the project. It named `Community Oriented Localized Early Warning System’ for Lalmonirhat and Gaibandha Districts in Bangladesh. This initiative was a part of the Zurich Flood Resilience Program (ZFRP) which is supported by Z Zurich Foundation through Zurich Flood Resilience Alliance (ZFRA). Locally it was implemented by Assistance for Social Organization and Development (ASOD) and Gana Unnayan Kendra (GUK).
