UP polls to be free from MP influence: Quader

The ruling Awami League (AL) General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister, Obaidul Quader, emphasised the impartiality and integrity of the upcoming upazila elections, slated to commence on May 8.

Speaking at a view exchange meeting with party leaders and workers from Rangpur division at AL’s Bangabandhu Avenue central office, Quader underscored that Members of Parliament (MPs) will not wield any influence or interference in these elections.

Highlighting the unique nature of the forthcoming polls, Quader stated that the election would be conducted without any party symbols, signaling a departure from conventional electoral practices.

“The elections will be held without party symbols. So, the purpose of the polls must be to be successful.

Lawmakers cannot interfere in the polls,” he affirmed.

Quader further elucidated the essence of the electoral process, stating, “Upazila polls are ahead. On your (leaders and workers) request, the prime minister has brought the scopes for you to contest the polls in a new way through open competitions.”

He further emphasised that the aim is to ensure a transparent and fair electoral environment, urging all potential candidates to participate without external pressure.

Asserting the party’s commitment to maintaining discipline and fairness, Quader cautioned against any form of misconduct or interference.

“We want a free and fair election without any influence from anyone. From the very beginning, we have been monitoring the organisational process.

If anyone makes any irresponsible comment, it will have an impact on the entire party discipline,” he asserted, signalling organisational repercussions for violations.

Reflecting on past electoral experiences, Quader acknowledged the challenges faced during national elections but commended the resilience displayed.

“Many people made different comments over the national elections. There were concerns over the polls, but everything was overcome through the completion of the elections,” he remarked.

The significance of international recognition was also highlighted, with Quader mentioning that 80 countries and 32 organisations extended congratulations to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on her getting reelected, signalling a global willingness to collaborate with Bangladesh.

The AL General Secretary urged party members to strengthen connections with the public and enhance organisational cohesion at various administrative levels.

He emphasised the need for bridges between districts, upazilas, and unions to facilitate effective governance and grassroots engagement.

The meeting was chaired by AL Presidium Member Shajahan Khan and attended by prominent party figures, including AL Joint General Secretary and Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud, Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, and Asaduzzaman Noor, MP. AL Organising Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi moderated the proceedings, reaffirming the party’s commitment to a transparent and inclusive electoral process.
