Six canals in port city to be re-excavated before monsoon

Chattogram Bureau :

Before the coming monsoon, six canals that have been renovated in the city will be re-excavated, said Lt. Col. Ferdous Ahmad, Director of the Drainage Project.

He said this at a coordination meeting organized at the Bangladesh Army’s 34 Construction Brigade office on Tuesday (March 12) afternoon.

Ferdous Ahmad said in the meeting, we are working to prevent waterlogging in the next monsoon season. There are plans to re-excavate the canals, especially those that have been renovated, in stages.

Canals around low-lying areas will be re-excavated so that the city dwellers do not have to suffer during monsoons.

In particular, there are plans to fully prepare the Mirza Canal, Chashma Canal, Chaktai Canal, Baklia Canal and Mahesh Khal for water flow.

Besides, if the canals connected with these canals can be cleaned, then this year the suffering will be tolerable in the places where there is more waterlogging, including gate number two, Badurtala, Bahaddarhat. Apart from this, the regulators installed in five canals under our control will be fully operational before this monsoon.

He said that out of the 36 canals that the army is working on, the returning wall work of 20 canals has been completed. Apart from this, 35 out of 45 bridges and 58 out of 70 culverts have been completed.

All together our project work progress is 65 percent. In the meeting, project officer Sujauddin Pathan spoke to reporters about his project in the construction of Chittagong flood protection dam.

At this time, Engineer Mohammad Mainuddin, Project Director of Chittagong Development Authority, was present.
