New judges take oath

The newly-appointed 10 additional judges of the High Court Division of Supreme Court took the oath of office at the Supreme Court auditorium in the city on Thursday.
Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha administered the oath. The judges of the

Appellate and High Court Divisions were present on the occasion.
The new Judges are Deputy Attorneys General Rajik Al Jalil, Bhismadeb Chakraborti, Md Selim and Md Sohrawardi, Supreme Court lawyers Khijir Ahmed Chowdhury, Jyotirmoy Narayan Deb Chowdhury and Md Iqbal Kabir Lytton, Metropolitan Sessions Judge of Chittagong SM Mojibur Rahman, Supreme Court Registrar Md Farid Ahmed Shibli and District and Sessions Judge of Gazipur Amir Hossain.
President Abdul Hamid gave the appointment for two years as per Article 98 of the Constitution, raising the number of High Court judges to 97. The Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs circulated a gazette regarding the appointment of the new judges on February 9.
The present government has so far appointed 68 HC judges since 2009. This was the first appointment of judges in the present tenure of the Awami League-led grand alliance government. Out of the 10 judges, SM Mojibur Rahman conducted the trial of much-talked about 10-truck arms haul case in Chittagong, while Md Farid Ahmed Shibli earlier served as the registrar of Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, the government appointed Syed Aminul Islam as the Registrar of Supreme Court. He was a joint secretary (administration) of the law ministry. The post of the registrar of Supreme Court fell vacant with the induction of the former registrar Md Farid Ahmed Shibli as the additional judge of the High Court Division on February 9. Md Zabid Hossain, special judge (district judge) of Comilla, was also appointed as the Additional Registrar of the High Court Division on deputation.
