Retail costs double than wholesale price

The prices of vegetables in Ishwardi’s haat-bazaar have come down by almost half in a week. However, the wholesale and retail markets are trading at a double gap. While the retailers benefit hugely, the common consumer suffers. Still, consumers are relieved as the prices have come down.
Winter vegetables have been imported in large quantities for the past one month, but the market has not been affected. As in the beginning of the season, buyers were buying vegetables at increased prices. However, the price of winter vegetables has started to decrease this week. Compared to last week, the prices of almost all types of vegetables have decreased by Tk 20 to Tk 30. This has brought relief to the buyers. The market has seen new potatoes Kathinal and White Holland retailing at Tk 30 per kg and small red potatoes at Tk 35 per kg. Eggplant is being sold at retail at Tk 30 per kg, wholesale at Tk 20. Last week also it was seen to be sold at 50 rupees. Ripe tomatoes are sold at 30 and 40 taka depending on the size. Cauliflower and cabbage are sold at Tk 20 per kg in the retail market but at Tk 5-10 in wholesale.
