Juri yellow watermelon cultivation gains ground

Two farmers in Moulvibazar’s Juri upazila have achieved success by cultivating off-season yellow watermelons using the trellis method, opening up new possibilities for profitable farming on small plots of land.

Farmers Sirajul Islam and Saidul Islam cultivated the watermelons for the first time in Domabari village of Gualbari Union. Their fields feature the ‘Suryadim’ and ‘Lanfe’ varieties, which are in high demand in the market because of their attractive colour, superior quality and excellent taste.

As a result, the farmers are selling their produce easily and fetching good prices.

By moving beyond conventional farming methods and cultivating high-demand watermelons with distinctive colours, the two farmers have opened up new opportunities for local farmers.

Juri Upazila Agriculture Officer Mahmudul Alam Khan said, “Cultivating watermelons on trellis structures during the off-season has opened up new possibilities in agriculture.

It is possible to achieve high yields and greater profits on small plots of land by utilising advanced technology.

The Department of Agriculture consistently provides the necessary technical support to farmers and will continue to support such innovative agricultural initiatives in the future.”
