Plastic pollution takes heavy toll on marine species

At present, the marine area of Bangladesh is taking over plastic pollution, said Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. Dr. Mohammad Rafiqul Alam of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET). He said pollution was adversely affecting the animals of about seven hundred tribes. Even some animals are now almost endangered as a result of this plastic pollution.

Under the project of the SCIP Plastics Project, under the supervision of the researchers of CUET, a great plan has been taken, including the use of jute as an alternative to plastic products, the VC informed. By reducing the use of plastic waste in the seaside and coastal areas, it is possible to ensure sustainable marine environment in the Bay of Bengal and other coastal areas of the country.

He said this while addressing a seminar on ‘Plastic Pollution Prevention’ seminars and workshops organized in the seminar room of CUET on Monday.

The special guest was the SCIP Plastics Project of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Environmental Strategy Dr. Sudeep Kumar Pal. Head of Civil Engineering Dr. Ayesha Akhtar, Registrar (Additional Responsibility) Prof Sheikh Mohammad Humayun Kabir, Director of the Department of Research and Extension Dr. Sajal Chandra, Prof of Civil Engineering Swapan Kumar Palit and Prof of Civil Engineering Dr. Asiful Haquea mong others were present on the occasion. Professor of Civil Engineering Farzana Rahman Juthi presided over the meeting.

SCIP Plastics Project is a project funded by the Federal Ministry of Federal Security and Nuclear Security in Germany.
