Opposition coop key to build new Bangladesh

Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee has said cooperation from the opposition is essential to protect democracy and accelerate development in Bangladesh.

He made the remarks on Friday while addressing an exchange meeting with beneficiaries of the ‘Be Strong’ project of the Social Development Foundation (SDF) at South Durgapur in Dighli Union under Chandraganj upazila.

Anee said political forces had jointly fought to protect the country and democracy and should now work together to build a new Bangladesh.

“We have worked to protect the country and its democracy through collective movements. Now our task is to protect this achievement and build Bangladesh anew. Cooperation from the opposition is necessary for this work,” he said.

The minister criticised the opposition for not attending the oath-taking ceremony of the new government and for continuing to talk about launching political movements.

He warned that prolonged agitation could disrupt development activities across the country.

“If Bangladesh remains in agitation all the time, development in the areas will not take place. Such movements are harmful to the locality as well as to the country,” he said.

Anee also alleged that the opposition was trying to weaken the BNP through continued agitation, hoping to gain political advantage.

He urged all political forces to remain united and work on the ground to protect democracy, development and stability in the country.
