Taming food prices is indeed the government’s hardest challenge

As the newly formed cabinet took charge, their first day at the office was marked by a resolute commitment to tackle the soaring prices the citizens are burdened with, especially in the lead-up to the holy month of Ramadan.

The acknowledgement of the urgency of the situation is a crucial step, considering the failures of the previous year’s attempts to control essential commodity prices, leading to severe consequences such as undernourishment and starvation for many.

The new Finance Minister, Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, affirmed that taming the skyrocketing prices is the top priority for the government. Amidst economic challenges, he expressed confidence that the government is well-equipped to overcome these hurdles.

The gravity of the situation is underscored by the fact that inflation has been consistently above 9 percent since March of the previous year, with food prices hitting double digits in October and November.

Although there was a slight dip to 9.5 percent in December, the respite was short-lived as prices surged again.

Addressing the concerns at the commerce ministry, State Minister Ahsanul Islam Titu issued a stern warning against those attempting to create artificial crises, be it producers, importers, or hoarders.

The emphasis on prosecution sends a strong message that the government is committed to holding those responsible for price manipulation accountable.

The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics has been closely monitoring the economic indicators. Bangladesh Bank Governor Abdur Rouf Talukder assured that measures would be continually taken until the point-to-point inflation drops to 6 percent.

This commitment from the central bank signals a determination to stabilize the economy and ensure affordability for the citizens.

While the path ahead may be challenging, the government’s acknowledgement of the issue, coupled with concrete measures and commitments from key ministers, instills hope that a comprehensive strategy is in place.

The administration must learn from past shortcomings, ensuring that the measures taken this time effectively address the root causes of inflation and prevent a recurrence of the hardships faced by citizens in the previous year.

The upcoming months will be crucial, and the success of these initiatives will determine the government’s ability to alleviate the economic burdens the people face.
