Kishoreganj -2 AL pick alleges widespread poll irregularities
Sr. Staff Reporter, Kishoreganj :
A senior leader of Kishoreganj Awami League Adv Sohrab Uddin has again been elected as an independent candidate under symbol Eagle in the 12th National Polls from Kishoreganj-2 (Pakundia-Katiadi) constituency.
The Awami League candidate under Boat symbol in that constituency retired Additional DIG freedom fighter Abdul Kahar Akand was defeated. However, Akanda alleges that ‘There has been a lot of irregularities in this constituency. I did not accept this election.’
Abdul Kahar Akand, the candidate for the Boat symbol, expressed such a reaction on Wednesday. He said, ‘I did not accept this election. I will complain to Election Commission. There have been widespread irregularities in this seat.’
However, Sohrab became the convener of Pakundia Awami League two years ago and his control over local Awami politics is very strong.
Advocate Sohrab Uddin, MP told the New Nation that , ‘In 2009 I was the upazila chairman. I was a Member of Parliament in 2014. During my time there has been a lot of development in the area. It was not possible at any other time after independence. Therefore, there was hope among the voters and leaders-workers that there would be great development by me. Common people want social security along with development. Common people’s faith will get social security through me. And so the voters made me the winner. It is a difficult matter to elect against boats from Awami League. But trusting the words of our leader, I stood in the election.’
This independent candidate also said, ‘There was a candidate here, Major Akhtaruzzaman. He announced that he would pass even if he was asleep. After that, I don’t know if it is right or not, they are harassing many of my leaders and workers in the name of NSI.
