Canada denies deploying official election observers
Staff Reporter :
The Canadian government has disclaimed that it did not deploy any official election observers to monitor Bangladesh’s 12th parliamentary election held on January 7.
It has further clarified that the individual who was identifying as a Canadian observer was acting independently.
“The Government of Canada has not deployed any election observers to monitor Bangladesh’s January 7 national election. Any individual who identifies as a Canadian observer is acting independently.
Their views have not been endorsed by the Government of Canada,” Canadian High Commission to Bangladesh twitted on the X on Monday.
This disavowal emphasized that any Canadian citizens partaking in the role of election observers during the Bangladesh national election are doing so of their own accord and without official endorsement from the Canadian government.
As the international community continues to pay close attention to Bangladesh electoral processes, the Canadian government’s stance highlights the importance of differentiating between independent citizens engaging in election observation and official government-sanctioned efforts in monitoring election in Dhaka.
It may be mentioned that Canadian Parliament member Chandra Arya and Senator Victor Oh had come to Bangladesh as election observers for the 12th National Parliament election.
