Train derails in Mirsarai

The rail communications of Chittagong with Dhaka and Sylhet remained cut-off for about 11 hours after Chittagong- bound Nasirabad Express coming from Mymensingh went off the track at Boro Takia under Mirsarai Upazila in the early hours of Monday due to removal of fish plates by miscreants.
At least 10 persons, including the locomotive master, were injured in the accident.
Railway authorities claimed that it was an act of sabotage as miscreants removed fish plates of the track.
The train service, however, was resumed at about 2:30pm yesterday.
Officials said the engine and two bogies of the inter-city train were derailed at around 3:30am, when it was 60 kilometers away from the last stoppage [Chittagong Station], and the train was running on the track with maximum speed.
“Some 120 clips-used to fasten tracks with sleepers – of around 126 feet railway line were removed by saboteurs,” said Firoz Iftekhar, Divisional Transport Officer, Eastern Zone, Bngaldesh Railway.
Officer -in Charge of Mirsarai Police Station Imtiaz Bhuiyan said that the miscreants removed the fishplates sometimes at the dead of night.
The Railway authorities cancelled the schedule of six trains due to the derailment. These were Dhaka-bound – Mahanagar Prabhati, Subarna Express, Mahanagar Godhuli Express, Karnaphuli Express and Chandpur bound Sagarika Express
“Two relief trains from Pahartali Railway Workshop and Laksham reached the spot and conducted salvage operations. The train service, however, was resumed at about 2:30 pm,” said Eastern Zone Railway General Manager Mozammel Haque.
A four-member committee, headed by Firoz Iftekhar, has been formed to investigate the incident. Other members of the committee are: Divisional Mechanical Engineer [loco] Towhidur Islam, Divisional Engineer-1 Abidur Rahman, DST Sakir Hossain.
The trains those left Dhaka and Sylhet on Sunday night could not reach Chittagong due to the derailment. The Dhaka bound Turna Express was halted at Sitakunda.
Hundreds of passengers had to wait at the Chittagong Railway Station till 11am before the authorities announced the cancellations.
Subarna was scheduled to leave station at 6:40am, Prabhati at 7am, Karnaphuli at 10am, Godhuli at 3pm and Sagarika at 7:40am.
The latest incident of railway sabotage took place when the BNP-led 20-party alliance has been observing the second day of nationwide 72-hour hartal along with nonstop blockade for the 28th consecutive day to protest against the confinement of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
