Low-income people hard hit by the soaring rice prices

In Bangladesh, the relentless surge in rice prices is imposing severe economic hardships on low-income individuals already contending with soaring inflation.

Coarse grain prices have surpassed Tk 50 per kilogram, exacerbating the financial strain on vulnerable populations.

The blame game among retailers, wholesalers, and millers is intensifying the confusion, with retailers attributing the price hike to the wholesale level, wholesalers pointing fingers at the mill level, and millers citing costlier paddy due to delays in planting and harvesting Aman, the country’s second-largest rice crop.

At the retail level in Dhaka, coarse rice, a staple for the poor, now commands Tk 51 per kilogram, marking a 3 per cent increase in just one month.

The finer variety is even pricier, at Tk 68.5 per kilogram.

Farmers underscore unfavourable weather conditions leading to delayed Aman harvesting, further compounding the crisis.

This surge in food prices extends beyond rice, contributing to a staggering 12.56 per cent food inflation in October, the highest in a decade.

The government has expanded relief measures aimed to cushion the impact on the poor by distributing substantial quantities of rice and flour.

However, these efforts are deemed insufficient to reverse the upward trajectory of rice prices. Experts emphasize the need for a holistic approach to address the market failure.

As commodity prices become increasingly volatile, there are concerns that without effective intervention, the suffering of the people will only intensify.

The soaring rice prices in Bangladesh represent a multifaceted challenge that demands immediate attention from the government to curb inflation and ensure food security for its vulnerable population.

The businessmen are in a freestyle to increase the price of essential commodities without considering people’s agony and plights.

When people are in a tight grip due to soaring inflation of all commodities and political unrest, the authorities concerned must contain the soaring price hike of the main staple immediately.
