After winning in the coin-session, Bangladesh decided to bat first and the Tigers piled up a fighting total of 310 for the loss of nine wickets against New Zealand on the first day of the first Test at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.
Bangladesh made a good start with two openers Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Zakir Hasan put on together 39 in the opening stand before Zakir Hasan (12) was bowled out by Ajaz Patel.
Joy top-scored with 86. He hit 11 fours in his 166-ball painstaking innings.
Joy reached his fourth Test half-century landmark using 93 deliveries with nine fours.
Joy and one-down Najmul Hossain Shanto contributed together 53 runs for the second wicket partnership before Shanto was caught at the deep mid-on by Kane Williamson off Glenn Phillips when Bangladesh’s score was 92 for the loss of two wickets.
Shanto made 37 from 35 deliveries featuring three sixes and two fours.
After Shanto’s dismissal, Joy and second-down Mominul Haque added together 88 runs in the third wicket stand before Mominul was caught behind by wicketkeeper Tom Blundell off Phillips when the hosts’ total was 180 for the loss of three wickets.
Mominul scored 37 from 78 balls including four fours.
After dismissal of Mominul, Joy could stay at the crease for a short period as he was caught by Daryl Mitchell off Ish Sodhi when the home side’s score was 184 for the loss of four wickets.
After Joy’s departure, Bangladesh batters failed to build any notable partnership.
Nurul Hasan, Shahadat Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nayeem Hasan added 29, 24, 20 and 16 runs respectively to the Tigers’ total.
Shoriful Islam remained unbeaten with 13 runs, while Taijul Islam remained unbeaten with eight runs.
Glenn Phillips captured four wickets in the space of 53 runs, while Kyle Jamieson and Ajaz Patel claimed two wickets each conceding 52 and 76 runs respectively.
Besides, Ish Sodhi took one wicket for 71 runs.
