More gas reserves found at SGFL’s Kailastila Well No. 2

Staff Reporter :
Sylhet Gas Fields Limited has made a new discovery of a natural gas field with a reserve of 53 billion cubic feet. The new gas reserves was found in an abandoned well at Kailastila Well No 2 Golapganj Upazila, Sylhet.

General Manager (operations) of the Sylhet Gas Fields Limited Engineer Abdul Jalil Pramanik confirmed the matter, saying it will take approximately another week to start production from this well.

The authorities expectthat an additional 7 million cubic feet of gas per day will be supplied from the Kailashtila-2 well operated by Sylhet Gas Fields Limited, resulting in the gas from the well saving the country Tk 36 billion a day.

“We hope the gas will be supplied to the national grid starting next week. We are expecting to yield some 7 million cubic feet of gas every day from the new layer,” General Manager (operations) of the Sylhet Gas Fields added.

Mentioning that gas was previously produced from a specific layer of this well, he said, “Production was halted due to water ingress into that layer.

During the re-excavation process of this temporarily closed well, multiple additional layers were discovered. Gas was detected in these layers during tests conducted on 9 and 11 November.” According to Sylhet Gas Field sources, after a prolonged halt to gas extraction from the Kailashtila-2 well, the process of re-drilling this well commenced on 27 July, and this week, gas presence was successfully confirmed in the well.

The government has initiated plans to explore and re-drill 46 wells across the country as a strategic move to boost gas production, aiming to address the prevailing energy crisis. The projected timeline for these excavations is to conclude by 2025, with an anticipated increase in gas production by 618 million cubic feet.

As part of this plan, Sylhet Gas Field Limited (SGFL) has initiated the excavation and re-excavation processes for 14 wells. Three of these wells in Sylhet commenced production last year, and another well is set to begin production.

Sylhet Gas Field insiders said in addition to gas, approximately 70 barrels of condensate can be obtained from the by-products of this well per day. The work over expenses for this project amount to approximately Tk71.85 crore and these costs are being self-financed by the SGFL.
