Why did Kazi Nazrul Islam write the song ‘Karar Oi Louho Kopat’
Two Bengals are now in a frenzy over the complaint of distorting the melody of the song ‘Karar Oi Louho Kopat’ written by the National Poet of Bangladesh, Kazi Nazrul Islam.
When the song was first written 100 years ago, there was no fuss. Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam wrote this song to protest the arrest of Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das.
According to the book ‘Nazrul Sohayika’ published by the West Bengal State Music Academy, the song ‘Karar Oi Louho Kopat’ was written by Nazrul in 1921. At that time, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s political guru (mentor) Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das was imprisoned by the British government for a long time.
To protest against it, the weekly ‘Banglar Kotha’ brought out an issue at that time. Deshbandhu’s wife Basanti Devi asked the poet for an article for this issue. Then the poet Kazi Nazrul Islam wrote the song ‘Karar Oi Louho Kopat’.
After it was printed, there was an uproar and the British government was furious.
Artiste Girin Chakraborty recorded this song in June 1949. Columbia Records released it to the market. This song also got huge popularity soon after its release, which is still in force.
It is noted that the song was later used in a movie.
