India to lead close vote in choosing between Putol and shambhu prasad for who’s south-east asia regional director position today

News Desk :

India, in conjunction with various countries from South and South East Asia, is set to conclude a fervent election campaign by voting between candidates from Bangladesh and Nepal for the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Regional Director position.

This significant decision will be made today during the WHO Regional Committee for South-East Asia’s 76th gathering in Delhi, chaired by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya.

Contenders for the Role:

Saima Wazed: Hailing from Bangladesh, she is the offspring of the country’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina. With a background in clinical psychology, Ms. Wazed has actively advised both the WHO and Bangladesh’s administration on mental health matters. She has garnered support from a myriad of mental health agencies and passionately counters critics who dismiss her experience because of her family connections.

Shambhu Prasad Acharya: Representing Nepal, Mr. Acharya brings with him a rich history in public health, boasting over three decades of experience and a significant role within WHO. His confidence in victory is bolstered by endorsements from many in the health sector.

Election Dynamics:

Of the 11 member nations, ten will cast their votes, including prominent members like India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Indonesia, among others. Myanmar, amidst international reproach for its 2020 political upheavals, has abstained from attending. Intriguingly, North Korea’s vote will be cast by its Indian ambassador.

As the curtains fall on this intense election phase, which saw mutual allegations of nepotism and gender bias, a moment of unity emerged with both candidates sharing a selfie during the WHO session’s commencement.

Stakes and Predictions:

While both camps have expressed optimism, Bangladesh’s concentrated campaign efforts and India’s potential backing suggest an advantage for Ms. Wazed. Nonetheless, Mr. Acharya remains upbeat, citing extensive endorsements from health professionals.

In the lead-up to this crucial vote, 15 regional health specialists penned an open letter, urging nations to prioritize the region’s needs, representing a fourth of the global populace, over political considerations.

What Lies Ahead:

Following this electoral decision, the selected candidate will be presented to the WHO’s executive body. The newly minted Regional Director will officially commence duties on February 1, 2024, taking over from the incumbent, Poonam Khetrapal Singh.
