Hamoon makes landfall, knocks off power in Cox’s Bazar

Cyclone Hamoon has made landfall on Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar coast with a wind speed of 80km per hour after losing strength.
The storm still caused a blackout in Cox’s Bazar after bearing down on the coast on Tuesday evening.
The circumference of the storm touched the coast around 6 pm, said Azizur Rahman, director of Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
Hamoon had become an extremely severe cyclone, but weakened and became a cyclone.
Azizur said it would take eight to 10 hours for the entire storm system to get on the land.
The coastal areas are experiencing heavy rainfall with wind gusts under the influence of the storm.
Md Humayun Kabir, assistant engineer at Power Development Board’s Cox’s Bazar office, said power supply stopped due to strong wind.
Golam Ahmed, general manager of Palli Bidyut Samity in Cox’s Bazar, said supply from the PDB stopped around 7 pm as the storm uprooted trees that pulled down electricity lines.
The Palli Bidyut Samity’s power supply stopped after about another half an hour, he said.
“It’s total darkness in Cox’s Bazar now.”
