Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Dhaka South unit has expressed regret over an attack on journalists during a protest procession in Dhanmondi and announced the formation of a three-member probe committee.
According to the organisation, the incident occurred on Tuesday (23 June) during an anti-fascism demonstration organised by its Dhanmondi Zone under the Dhaka South unit.
In a statement, Mohammad Delawar Hossain, a member of Jamaat-e-Islami’s central executive council and assistant secretary of Dhaka South, said the party respected independent journalism and remained committed to ensuring journalists’ safety.
He said that if any Jamaat leader or activist was found to have been involved in the attack on journalists, organisational as well as legal action would be taken based on the findings.
Delawar Hossain said efforts were underway to identify the attackers by reviewing video footage of the incident.
He added that the party was also examining whether any infiltrators had been involved in carrying out the attack during the programme.
